Sex [noun]
sexual activity, including specifically sexual intercourse.
Mating [verb]
connect or be connected mechanically.
Popular culture has many references to sex - we see it so often in films, read about it in books and talk about it in sex ed in schools. From Salt-N-Pepa’s ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’ to the infamous Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’ song, sex is everywhere and is probably happening right now and every minute of the day somewhere in the world - a concept so well captured in one of the opening scenes of the French film Amélie.
Yet despite the proliferation of sex content out there, in this project we are curious to know how much we actually talk about sex and to what level of detail we are comfortable talking about it. Even more, who are we comfortable talking about sex with? And how many of us communicate what we want and don’t want whilst having sex? We invite you to open your minds and to consider how sex is perceived and experienced in a variety of contexts and to penetrate a little deeper than what you may already know about sex.
For that reason, we have featured storytellers tackling and demystifying mainstream notions of sex, exploring it from different angles that include prostitution, pornography, sex therapy and sex/sexual health advocacy.
We hope that this is one of many stories you learn from and that we continue to openly explore the discourse of sex with one another. The more we can talk about it beyond what we experience in popular culture, the more we can have healthier relationships with ourselves, with our partner(s), with different sexualities and to those who work in the industry.
Happy humping,
